Impact of KVK

Impact of KVK, Varanasi from 2012 - 13 to 2014 - 15 :

KVK play major role by improvement and introduction of new technologies in agriculture, horticulture, animal science, agroforestry, floriculture, home science and seed production sectors for improving the status of farmer’s livelihood in Varanasi district. Impacts of KVK, Varanasi are as:-

  • As a result of front line demonstration paddy variety (NDR-359, NDR-97) and wheat variety (NW-1014, PBW- 550, UP-2425), Pea (Aparna, Rachana, Malviya-15) have occupied substantial area in district.
  • 40 % farmers adopted HYV of paddy, wheat, gram, pea, mustard and maize after training and demonstration conducted by KVK.
  • 485 ha area covered under zero tillage in district as a result of field demonstration & training at different blocks of the district conducted by KVK.
  • After training and field demonstration conducted by KVK to control kahaira disease by application of Zinc, 48% farmers adopted zink application in paddy as foliar spraying @ 5 kg zink and 20 kg per hectare as basal dose.
  • 22 % adaptations were found in use of bio-fertilizers in wheat i.e. Azotobaceter and PSB as well as compost to improve yield and soil health.
  • Before conducting front line demonstration and on form trials on farmers field KVK organized training on soil health testing at different blocks and villages to aware farmers regarding to checkup their soil health and trained them how to collect soil sample. This resulted 160 soil sample tested by KVK and soil health card issues to the farmers.
  • 32% adaptation has recorded in use of trichoderma for seed and soil treatment to improve soil heath, yield and protection from diseases.
  • The demonstration on pigeon pea variety NDA-2 through front line demonstration programme spread over the district covering area 67% of total pigeon pea cultivated area. The variety NDA-2 is highly acceptable to farmers due to its high yield, three times flowering, disease resistant from wilt and replacing other variety in district.
  • Ridge sowing technology for the pigeon pea increase the production and 35% farmers adopted ridge sowing after getting training and field demonstration conducted by KVK.
  • In oil seed crop Mustard variety NDR-8501 is high yielding & high oil content (40%), disease resistant variety. Due to these characteristic, the farmer prefers more than others varieties. Training and field demonstration done by KVK on this variety increases the acceptability and adoptability for this among the farmers and covers 43% of total cultivated area of mustard in selected village of Varanasi district.
  • Seed replacement rate of KVK is 27% in 5 selected villages of the district where KVK run their programme.
  • After field visit, demonstration, training and advisory services provided by KVK increases the use of sulpher up to 32% in pulses and oil seed crops to increase the quality of seed and oil content respectively and also overcome the sulphur deficiency in soil.
  • Seed and soil treatment control several soil and seed born disease, training and demonstration conducted on this, aware the farmers regarding this and getting more profit in vegetable production.
  • Under demonstration programme conducted by KVK , the cow-pea variety CP-4 is covered more than 165 ha land under this crop due to its high yielding quality and green pod colour.
  • The okra variety US-7109 is very much popular among the farmers due to having high numbers of fruits per plant and small in size and bright green color of pod, demonstrated at farmer’s field and training given on cultivation practice by KVK. The other variety NS-2535 is spread more than 76 hectare due frontline demonstration conducted by KVK.
  • The Bel Narendra-5 is also occupied substantial area in Varanasi district due to its good keeping quality.
  • In Anola variety NA-7 and NA-10 is very much popular among the farmers covering 78 % of cultivated area of anola due training organized by KVK.
  • The impact of KVK training & demonstration on Guava, variety L-49 is also occupied 45% area of total guava production. Its disease resistant quality against wilt make more popular among the farmers.
  • Sixteen orchards of mango, 97 orchard of guava and 25 orchards of papaya have been established after training and farmer’s field visit.
  • 23 fruits/ forest/flowers/ornamental plants nurseries have been established as result of vocational training and field demonstration.
  • Onion variety Agri found light red has 250-300 gm per bulb weight, good keeping quality (8-9 months) and tolerance to disease, suitable for Rabi season. Whereas other variety Agri Found Dark Red big in size is suitable for Kharif onion production; spared over the villages selected demonstrated by KVK in district.
  • Gajendra -1, variety of suran is widely cultivated and occupying more 322 hectare land of suran cultivation after training conducted for their production technique and front line demonstration conducted by KVK.
  • The demonstration on Haldi variety Narendra Haldi-1 conducted by KVK in selected village, spread more than 225 ha land in district due its high yield and good in taste & disease free variety.
  • Marigold production was low in the district but the introduction of new improved varieties and planting techniques, the farmers of the district are now cultivating marigold on large scale with high productivity covered 55% area of the cultivated area under marigold.
  • Teak plantation on bunds, boundaries and wasteland is also increased and farmers adopted it by training conducted by KCK. Now almost 35% farmers of Varanasi district are planted it on his bunds and boundaries near their house hold.
  • Introduce the Barbary bread in district due to its some special characteristics likes stall feeding, twice pregnancy in year and 2-3 cub once in time, good meet quality and high growth. At least 25% local bread improved by crossing. KVK donate one male and two female kids to the land less farmers to improved their livelihood and increased their economic status. 35% land less farmers benefited by this programme.
  • In district there was no proper use of green fodder in animal feed. Seeing these problems KVK decided to conduct training and demonstration on green fodder production and importance in daily diet of animals. Now a day’s villages of selected by the KVK, 20-35% farmers of these villages accepted and adopted these practices.
  • Vaccination and dewarming in dairy and farm cattle increased by 32% after knowledge sharing to farmers through training. After sharing of importance and benefits of artificial insemination for the farm animals and dairy, the 28% farmers adopted these technologies and benefited.
  • In other hand in Varanasi district poultry farming is one of the most beneficial agro-industry for the farmers in respect of meet and egg. KVK play an important role for popularization this industry by training as an employment generating industry for the land less farmers of the district. 42% of the rural youth getting self employment and also delivered employment to some other youth of the village. In this contexts backyard poultry is most profitable for the poor and landless farmers of the district.
  • Nutritional garden are introduced by the KVK for farmer’s of the district to fulfill the daily nutritional requirement of their family. The farmer’s adopted this and planted fruit plant, vegetable etc. on their household.
  • The production of oyster mushroom unit is increased almost 22% in Varanasi district by the corporation of training & FLD conducted by KVK in selected village.
  • The fruit and vegetable preservation units are increased 32 % after the training conducted by KVK.
